Day 10: Bernie Rally with The Strokes and Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez
Durham, NH -
After a delicious lunch of homemade mac and cheese from a local chain called Mr. Mac's. Highly, highly recommend, though unfortunately bad for vegans (so sorry Andrea!). After hearing about it from so many at our office, we finally went and it was a fantastic experience.
After some driving, we have made it to the University of New Hampshire's arena where the rally is being held tonight! We make it inside to get started with volunteering and our leader recognized us as "the Florida people" again, which made us smile! There wasn't much to do until the doors open, so we sat for a few minutes. This arena is huge! Apparently it is typically used as a hockey arena, and so there were areas on the edge that were freezing cold. We helped set up the fence in front of the stage and put up the decorations that hide the press. Then we went to our favorite area, where we are now pros: the ADA section! We set up the chairs again and put up signing. When the doors started opening a bunch of us when to help with that while myself, Andrea, and Peyton remained in the ADA section. Most of out time was spent telling people they couldn't come in and trying to prevent people from jumping the line.
The event started at 7pm. First, the indie band Sunflower Bean played and they did a great cover of The Who's song "My Generation". Then, we heard from the potential next NH governor Andru Zelinsky (my new buddy), Dr. Cornel West (one of my personal inspirations), Ms. Nina Turner (Hello Somebody!!), Cynthia Nixon, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and then Sen. Sanders himself!!! It was phenomental! The energy was on fire! Then The Strokes came out!!!!!!! The performed new songs and some classics. I'm a longtime fan and it was amazing! I bought a limited edition Bernie/Strokes shirt earlier and we all danced like crazy!
We left feeling great about our chances tomorrow! :)
